The InnoVis research group welcomes applications for a full-time PhD student. InnoVis research encompasses information visualization, visual analytics, interaction design, human computer interaction, computer supported collaboration, computational media design, interactive art and topics that span one or more of these. Our vision is to explore how visualization and interaction can be used to empower people through better access to their data and to the information in the world around us.

TOPICS of PARTICULAR INTEREST INCLUDE:

  • Visualizing social media
  • Personal visual analytics
  • Collaborative visual analytics
  • Sketch-based interaction for visualization
  • Uses of visualization in aiding search
  • Visualization and interaction to support serendipity

LOCATION

The successful applicant will work as part of the InnoVis research team led by Sheelagh Carpendale. InnoVis is part of a joint lab – the Interactions Lab (iLab) – which is shared with research groups led by Drs. Wesley Willett, Lora Oehlberg, Saul Greenberg, Ehud Sharlin, and Anthony Tang. The iLab is located in the University of Calgary.

Calgary is an active and rapidly growing city situated at the eastern edge of the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
