Responsive Interaction in InfoVis Interfaces

We want to develop a framework that can be used to solve critical problems that arise when interactive systems are extended to large displays. Such problems include slow reaction times, difficulties with high numbers of concurrent interactions or user inputs, and problems that occur when combining several aspects of visualizations. These problems arise due to a number of complexities present in current approaches. This makes it not feasible to simply wait until the computing power has increased sufficiently. Thus, this calls for a fundamentally new approach in computer interface research. The framework will combine ideas from non-photorealistic rendering (NPR), information visualization, large displays, and collaborative work.

Benefits

The benefits of the project are the improvement of the interaction on large displays such as a 12 foot long wall or a tabletop. There, pixel counts may easily reach 9 million (compared to 1-2 million in desktops) making it impossible to achieve interactivity with traditional methods. In addition, this project aims to support multi-user information exploration on these displays. Through the unifying framework, the project offers the integration of several visualization and HCI methods. This will permit new ways of using these rendering techniques to enable communication and comprehension. Finally, interaction on large tabletop or wall displays will be supported in many different new ways opening up an entirely new field of information visualization research.
